Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie,
A fly can't bird, but a bird can fly.
Ask me a riddle and I reply:
"Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie."

Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie,
A fish can't whistle and neither can I
Ask me a riddle and I reply:
"Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie."

Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie,
Why does a chicken, I don't know why.
Ask me a riddle and I reply:
"Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie"

Winnie-the-Pooh, as quoted by Benjamin Hoff in The Tao of Pooh, where the "Cottleston Pie principle" is explained. At its core: why does a chicken? - I don't know why!

Yesterday

Yesterday was the day I woke up after a bad dream about trains, appointments in distant cities, railway stations like labyrinths and not enough money for the fare;

Yesterday was the day I had to wait four hours at the police station because of a stolen handbag containing passport, credits cards and mobile phone, plus a few make-up items and photos of the beloved ones;

Yesterday was the day I discovered Sylvia Plath.

Life is wonderful.

Words

Axes
After whose stroke the wood rings
And the echoes!
Echoes traveling
Off from the center like horses.

The sap
Wells like tears, like the
Water striving
To re-establish its mirror
Over the rock

That drops and turns
A white skull
Eaten by weedy greens.
Years later I
Encounter them on the road -

Words dry and riderless,
The indefatigable hoof-taps.
While
From the bottom of the pool, fixed stars
Govern a life.

Sylvia Plath

scratch... scratch...

Musique: Louis-Claude d'Aquin (1694-1772), "Une jeune pucelle", in : Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Messe de Minuit sur des airs populaires français

My party piece:

I strike, then from the moment when the matchstick
conjures up its light, to when the brightness moves
beyond its means, and dies, I say the story
of my life -

dates and places, torches I carried,
a cast of names and faces, those
who showed me love, or came close,
the changes I made, the lessons I learnt -

then somehow still find time to stall and blush
before I'm bitten by the flame, and burnt.

A warning, though, to anyone nursing
an ounce of sadness, anyone alone:
don't try this on your own; it's dangerous,
madness.

Simon Armitage, from Book of Matches

"The World card, very aptly, represents a successful conclusion, all aspects accounted for and taken in. Simply put, this card tells the Querent that the end to a long-term project is in sight, and that it will be accompanied by well-earned praise, celebration and success. With Saturn as its ruling planet, this card can also indicate that the Querent, now an expert in their subject, is likely to become a teacher or sought-after lecturer. And, finally, on a more mundane level, the World card indicates travel, not short business trips, but long, fantastic trips. Maybe a lecture tour, book signing, or just a trip around the world. This is a wonderful card of wholeness, perfection, satisfaction and happiness."

Good perspective - who knows?
